It's all gone tits up

Sorry for such a long absence, I have been lying in a dark room surrounded by boxes feeling sorry for myself.  Ridiculous really with all thats going on in the world.  So many lost lives, so much heartbreak.  Anyway, long story short, the new house we are buying has planning issues that until they are sorted we can't proceed.  Our buyers are putting huge pressure on us to move, helpfully suggesting we put our stuff in storage and find temporary accommodation at short notice.....really easy in Cornwall at this time of year with a cat in tow.  I've cried, I've ranted, I've had sleepless nights waking up in a panic, wondering where the hell we are going to end up. I hate depending on solicitors to sort things out.  I hate not having a plan of action as we really don't know time scales on sorting it out.   I could go on and on but I won't or I end up crying.....again.  We have done everything we can possibly do, it is out of our hands now we just have to let the solicitors sort out the legal side of it.

Talking of boxes, it is surprising how much 'stuff' you don't really need.  With the majority of our possessions in boxes we have been living a very minimal existence.  I had packed two huge suitcases of clothes that don't fit or rarely get worn to take with us and then thought why keep it all?  So off the the charity shop they went.  It is a bit like being on holiday, we spent three weeks travelling around Australia a few years ago, living out of suitcases and didn't miss any of our possessions.  I look at all of the boxes and can't believe how much 'stuff' we have collected over the years let along how much money was spent on them.  Once we get to wherever we end up I will be opening every box and asking myself, do I need it or does it bring me pleasure, if the answer is no then it will have to go.  I have to confess that I have bought some wool and needles.  I had packed everything thinking it would be only for a couple of weeks but find myself in need of something calming to do so I am making a shawl. It is a very simple garter stitch, I think my frazzled mind can cope with that.   I will share my progress when I can.

Louise Bourgeois says 'Art is a guaranty of sanity', so I took myself off to see an amazing tapestry by the wonderful Grayson Perry.    It certainly lightened my mood for a little while.  It is from The Vanity of Small Differences  I have shared some photos, but you really need to see it catch the many little details that make it so witty and wonderful.

  1. Oh no! I had wondered how you were getting on. Our sellers are having a boundary dispute issue so we can't complete our purchase until they resolve that and now they're at risk of losing the house they want - it's been getting me down these last 6 weeks or so, it's all so stressful! Let's hope things are sorted soon for both of us.

  2. I am so sorry to read this! There is ALWAYS something and I often wonder how on earth Solicitors don't know the pitfalls by now. I think it's so that they can justify the charges they bill us for. I can remember when selling our old Sweetbriar, the solicitor on our buyer's side kept on dragging their heels, so I just said it was no skin off my nose and would just pull out. Funny, the solicitor sorted everything out in two days!! xx

  3. I thought it was all going okay for you. We've lost our buyer because there is an issue with their drains, so their buyer has dropped out meaning that they've dropped out of buying our house. This all happened just a few days before signing contracts. Our house is now back on the market and we're back at square one. It is so stressful. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.

  9. sending positive thoughts your way, we ave never managed to buy a place without issues hence never moving again, the land we are buying that our offer was accepted on July last year is still not progressing, we havent even got to the exchange stage, like they say good things come to those who wait.

  12. Oh no, poor you. There's a reason that moving house is right up there on the life's most stressful events list; it's all a complete nightmare. Fingers crossed that it all gets sorted soon and don't be bullied by your buyers. Enjoy your knitting. xx

  14. Oh no, I do feel for you and have everything crossed that it sorts out soon. It must be so unsettling... And I hope you don't have to bow to that pressure to move into something temporary. My mum and sister in law both did that and even though Mum came to us it was far from ideal for anyone.

  15. What a total pain in the backside! Having recently moved I share your pain. We're renting so our problem is finding the right home. We've viewed over 20 now, what makes things worse for us is that two perfect properties sold just a couple of months before we completed. So it could be a long haul for us, we just have to keep our nerve and wait. I hope your house move completes sooner rather than later.

  16. Oh you poor thing. What a miserable experience. I agree about possessions. We frequently have a big clear out and I always feel better for it. Travelling light is the way to go. Hope things get sorted for you my dear x

  17. I am new to your blog and sorry to have stumbled on you at such a torrid time! Especially as I have literally just gone through the same crap with the house we moved into a fortnight ago, so I can really empathise! In our case our useless solicitor didn't exchange contracts until 4pm on the day we were supposed to move (and completed simultaneously) so we had no certainty up until the last minute...and had handed the keys back to our last house that morning. So stressful!

All I can reassure you is that it will eventually end and will be so worth it once you are settled in your new pad! Don't be afraid to be that annoying client calling up every 5 minutes, I am afraid it seems to be the only way to get things done.

    Good luck!

  18. Moving is hell isn't it? However when you are happily in your new place the hell will fade. Talking about getting rid of stuff we are just back from a six week trip just on hand luggage and still had too much stuff. Just goes to show how little we actually need. Take heart, long deep breaths and keep smiling you will be in your new place very soon. Good luck and best wishes.

  21. Oh gosh I do hope that you can get it all sorted out, the wheels of moving house do seem to go very slowly don't they! Keeping knitting in the meantime! xx

  22. My sympathies regarding your present situation. Just a thought that if you are indeed thinking of moving out so that you don't lose your buyer, look at non-touristy places inland. I live in a village on the edge of Bodmin Moor and there are houses to rent, often advertised on various 'Selling' online sites.
I hope those planning issues are soon sorted and you can at last move to your new home.

  23. So sorry to hear about the house, Chickpea. It's the feeling of limbo that's so frustrating. I shall keep my fingers crossed that all will be well in the end.

  24. Thanks for your best wishes everyone, it sounds like a lot of people have problems around buying and selling. When we had the offer on our house last November we were prepared to go into rented accommodation until we found something to avoid this 'chain nightmare' our buyers didn't actually want to move until this month so we have found ourselves in a chain. The next time we move I will definitely sell first so we aren't put under this pressure to move out with nowhere to go!
