Spot the Mistake

Ok all you wonderful crochet peeps, please be gentle with me.   I have not really done much crochet despite teaching myself the basic stitches when I was a child, I have never actually made anything.  Inspired by all of the wonderful crochet work that many of you post, I thought I would make a blanket.    How hard could it be I thought.........    Well it does help if you read the instructions properly before you start, not just launch off into something.  But a leopard can't change it's spots so off I went, it did pop into my head that it didn't look quite the same as the photo, but in my inexperience I thought it would all come right when I did the joining bit.  I should listen to that little voice in my head sometimes, it seems to have more sense than me!

So after a few months of not working on the blanket I decided to pick it up again.  Of course I had completely forgotten what I was doing so re read the instructions and realised that I had missed one important point.  It was 3 dtr CLUSTERS I was meant to be doing so I have LOTS of circles which are not right.   I'm not going to start again as I know it just won't happen so I will carry on as I am.  It will not look the same but I'm hoping it won't look too bad.

This is the photo of the circle in the book

T
and this is my version of it - whoops

They certainly will not look like petals when I crochet the next bit.  I am using the join as you go method so will not see the true effect until they are all completed.  I really need to learn patience.

I was intending to join with Thistlebears Winter Project Link Party ,  but my wonky crochet looks a bit pathetic among all of the wonderful projects people have been sharing on there but what the hell, count me in......just don't look too carefully.  Pop over there and see how crochet is meant to be done, especially by the host of the party Jennifer.

Have any of you got half way through a project before you realised you were doing it wrong?  Go on do tell :)

  1. I think they look lovely and could be a happy accident, as they say you learn by your mistakes but this will be unique to you :-)

  2. Erm, - surely you have been creative and designed your own special Chickpea pattern? That would be my story and I would stick to it!

  3. I actually don't think it looks too bad and the colour combinations are beautiful.

  4. They look absolutely fine, and who's to know? Well, other than the fact that you've told us all ! I've made lots of blankets, throws and scarves over the years and inevitably have made mistakes here and there. But it's only me who knows about the mistakes.....they are invariably invisible to anyone else. And, as FC above says - it's your own special design! Don't worry a jot about it, I say.

  5. If you hadn't pointed out the mistake, I'm not sure I would have noticed. Think of it as a Persian carpet with a deliberate mistake! xx

  6. You have created a unique design for your own use, well done.

  7. I think they look lovely and the colours are fantastic. I'm looking forward to seeing the finished blanket. If I'm creating anything it's sooooo painfully slow that I have plenty of time to notice and rectify any mistakes. X

  8. I love the colours of your circles, it will be a beautiful blanket. You didn't make a mistake, you just interpreted the pattern differently. x

  11. I was just thinking the same as everyone else, they call it artistic licence I think or something like that! That is what you have used, who wants something exactly the same anyway. Great colours and completely unique. xx

  13. As long as you carry on doing the same all will be fine - and in fact, it will be better than fine because it will be your own design and very beautiful it will be too!!! So, I say, don't start again, just carry on and keeping making something beautiful because what you have made already is beautiful!!! xx

  14. I think they look great. I like the fact that your are different from everyones.
Makes them very special and I know they will look great when finished.

My mistake was I was making some hand made books after I had made some a few months previous.
As I was putting them together and glueing on the front and back cover papers something seemed wrong.
I went back and looked at an older book and saw I had folded the cover paper over instead of cutting the edges as I just did. It looked fine but I goofed.

    cheers, parsnip

  15. They look great. You could just dot them around with the new ones when you join it all together as if it's meant to be like that, no problem! I've taught myself recently from YouTube and find my tension is a bit loose even though I'm using a smaller hook however it doesn't really matter as it's great fun! I look forward to seeing your blanket when it's done. :-)

  17. The fact is we are all human NOT machines, that's what makes us unique mistakes n all,all the best patterns, recipes etc are created by mistakes, creative learning.Bring it on.Love your crochet.xx

  18. They look great, it's you own interpretation of a theme, and it's unique. My mistake, last week starting the front of the Aran jumper I'm doing for the O.H Christmas present, had completed the rib and then discovered that I had done a single rib not a double as I have on the back, and yes, I did have to start over.

  19. Looks fine to me... colorful and interesting. Sometimes the 'mistakes' are better than what was intended.

  20. I crochet and I think they look great! In fact, I wouldn't have even known there was a "problem" if you hadn't said anything. i always go by the old principle that my grandmother taught me, "No one will notice from a galloping horse."
