Is it me or is it too flipping hot in here?

As part of my job I work in various places, yesterday I walked into the usual room I use and was hit by the intense heat, I had to walked out again.  It was ridiculously hot in there, I wouldn't have lasted 5 minutes, neither would my clients.  I asked for another room that was slightly cooler.    This is not a one off, go into the big stores in winter and they will be pumping out the heat causing everyone to strip off outer layers before they succumb to heat stroke.  I know little old me doesn't know much about energy issues.  I hear the 'experts' warning us about blackouts due to running out of this that and the other this winter, (the cynical side of me thinks they are trying to scare us into agreeing to new nuclear plants and fracking), but surely turning down the heat makes sense and would save an awful lot of energy.  Have we all become delicate little hot house flowers?   As I say to my sons who moan that our house is cold when they visit, put a jumper on!! It is not cold, just a sensible temperature that we are used to.   Is it just me, yes I am a woman of a certain age, or do you find the shops, public buildings etc just too warm?

In other news I have just ordered my Xmas cards from the Crohns Association.  This is a record, I have never done any preparation for Xmas so early, I may have to go and lie down now.   I really have to get on with it this year as we have a new grandchild due at Xmas so we have to be ready in case we are needed.

As I was making soup this morning I was struck by the beautiful colours that mark this time of year, so I squelched out into my garden to take some photos to share with you.  All the golds, oranges, reds and browns were even reflected in the food I love at this time of year.

Carrot and butternut squash soup

There are also new signs of life in the garden that are confusing me.  I put in some 'spring' bulbs a couple of weeks ago and they are already coming through.  I'm not a gardener but isn't this a bit early even for Cornwall, does it mean they will be all gone by Spring?  Perhaps they should be renamed winter bulbs.

  1. Hi Chickpea, I thought it was me and my hot flushes but the boys have felt it today so it can't be that, we have had blue tits going in and out of our nest box, so I hope their not getting confused by the weather.

  3. Well done on an early start to the Christmas preparations. I quite agree with you about the sweltering heat in lots of places. I watch the programme Goggle box where they film ordinary people watching television programmes and every week I'm surprised by the fact that every family filmed are all sitting in T-shirts. It's winter for goodness sake if you are in short sleeves then your house is too hot!

  4. I agree turn the heat down. And while we are at it, turn off the lights in shops overnight wasting energy too.

  5. No it is not just you !

I always have a cold home. I have never liked heated homes. Scarves and socks in the home if your cold.
Of course I live in a desert... go figure !
But we do have 2 months of a "winter" so it does get a wee bit cold.
I usually have all my shopping done, what I do of it because I don't like the too hot stores and sick children spewing green snot.
I have several health problem, auto immune problems and Fibromyalgia so I stay away from crowds.
Plus I have to have my boxes ready to mail to Japan and the UK.
Plus I haven't even started my Christmas Card yet. I have the rough sketches done but I need to sit down and finish it.

    cheers, parsnip

I'm with you, and don't keep the A/C so high in the summer that you wear one in July.

  8. Love your photo's each year the leaves make a beautiful display. I have a new job working over two sites, and in both offices the heating is far to high, at the moment I am wearing summer tops in the office, no one notices how hot it is, and every one has a cough! I would hate to see their heating bills.

  10. Having had a shop for 5 years I know were you are coming from regarding them being too hot, some customers use to complain about our shop, but its a no win sitiuation, you have it warm so the staff are comfortable but then its too hot for customers who come in wrapped up in coats hats and scarfs, the shop heating was always set at 19c with the door being opened and closed all day it was difficult to keep it warm, unfortunatly 19c is too warm for outdoor wear but made it a comfortable working enviroment, at home we always layer up but we no longerhave central heating and never have heating in our bedroom.

  12. I've got daffodils and crocus coming through in the garden, and a honeysuckle that's started to flower! Goodness knows what will happen to them if we get the long cold snap that some papers are forecasting! x

  13. I hate it when the heat is on in shops and the front doors are open. and then I am also enraged by the milk area and all the meat areas being open and all the cold air being leaked out into supermarkets.

going in and out of shops gives me a head ache in the winter.

I have all my Christmas cards ready for Overseas families already. They will be posted Friday or monday next week. Else they wont get there.

  14. I hate the heat problem too - in shops and public places. Lovely collection of photos. I'm sure I've seen loads of bluebell shoots lately... if it was spring I'd be confidently saying that, but because it's November I keep thinking I must be mistaken and they must be something else... but I think this warm weather has just fooled everything!

  15. I nearly passed out in a shopping centre last week, it was so hot. It doesn't help that we've had such a mild autumn too. Sometimes the cold is refreshing. x

  16. Thank you for the replies everyone, it seems I'm not the only one who finds it too warm, and yes Jean they should turn the light off in shops and offices overnight.

  17. Christmas cards - aaargh! I have 'just' toyed with the notion of making everyone their Christmas presents this year and then realised how quickly it is charging toward us!Maybe someone will get a pair of mittens! Lovely to meet you and I look forward to reading more of your posts x Jane

  19. There are bulbs coming up everywhere here Chickpea. Ridiculous and I completely agree about public buildings. OB's school was sweltering this morning! x

  20. I don't think you are being cynical about the threats of power shortages, I'm sure it is the way that government is trying to beat people into accepting fracking and nuclear, it's a shame they don't do more to encourage people, especially industries to reduce power usage. Stop wasting energy lighting empty buildings would be a good start.

  21. We have bulbs trying to show up already too! I can be hot or cold at the drop of a hat, so no good asking me about temperature! xx

  22. Dear Anonymous, thank you for taking the time to post your thoughts. I'm sure you don't have to worry about a boycott, with an attitude like that any sane American woman wouldn't touch you with a barge pole ( a quaint British saying) Speaking as a British and a European woman we wouldn't be interested your misogynistic ass either. (you may want to look that word up)
