A little premature?

Last week I put the cucumber and tomato seeds into pots and came down this morning to find them popping up through the soil.  Being a newbie when it comes to starting them from seed I am now thinking I probably started this far too early.  Are they likely to be o.k. or should I get some more seeds to plant later?  Any advice appreciated :)

  1. the tomatoes are fine but a bit earlier for cues if you can keep the night chill off them they will be OK

  2. They will be fine if you keep them indoors until the frosts have gone. You could always sell the tomato and cucumber plants when they get stronger?

  3. As Dawn has said the tomatoes will be fine this is the right time to sow them, your cues will probally be OK if you transplant them onto the tunnel when they are big enough, cues like to be in the middle of the tunnel where it is more humid, tomatoes on the other hand prefer nearer the doorways so they get blown by a breeze which will help set the flowers, if you are planting the toms in the tunnel plant a tube next to them so you water into the tube, you can use old plastic bottles with the top and bottom cut off,it just helps to get the water where it is most needed.

  4. For tomatoes 6 to 8 weeks before they need transplanting. Cucumbers only take 3 to 4 weeks but they should be alright as long as there are no more frosts. It has been such a mild Winter I suspect they will be fine.

  5. I just pricked out my tomato seedlings this morning into their 3"or so pots. I do this when they are still at the two leaf/cotyledon stage ..others wait until the first true leaves come , which I do with other seeds , but with tomatoes I do it this way so as not to stress the delicate roots .
I,ve also taken them off the kitchen windowsil and taken them up to my husband's shed which has a massive window + much more light and is slightly cooler than in my kitchen . Although we very rarely get frost here in Cornwall I still wouldn't put them outside just yet . You are so lucky to have a polytunnel!

  7. Thank you for your advice everyone, I have not started cucumbers and tomatoes from seed before so haven't a clue what I'm meant to be doing! It is really helpful to have experienced growers passing on their knowledge. :)

  8. I can't give any gardening advice as I tend to flounder around with fingers crossed. I'm not ready to face the chilly garden and greenhouse yet, I need to hurry up before I leave things too late xx

  10. Wow! They sure popped up fast. It will take a while for them to grow so I think you should be okay. Since you've started in pots they are easily moved around if you need to shelter them for any reason. Good luck!

  11. I'm dithering about whether or not to grow anything from seed thisyear. I haven't actually bought any seeds but I do have those which I harvested last year and it would be a shame to waste them.
But there's a drawback to having a greenhouse, which had never occurred to me before when I was wishing I had one - I go off camping at the first sniff of good weather and it's not good to leave a greenhouse when the sun is shining! Last year I came back to shrivelled, dried up and very dead plants. :(
There's no-one close enough to pop in twice a day to open / close the door and window and to keep everything watered. What to do?
