The Year in Books

I have to confess I haven't finished last months book yet, blame it on Breaking Bad, I have been trying to catch up by watching one episode a night.   I'm on the last season now so I will be getting my life back soon.

I am enjoying cloud atlas and will tell you more about it when I have finished it.  The next book I have chosen is Home by Marilynne Robinson.  I read Housekeeping by her and absolutely loved it so I have high hopes for this one.

It has been a long hot day here, not helped by terrible traffic getting to and from work.  It will probably be even worse tomorrow, I am working in Newquay and Boardmasters Surf Festival is on there this weekend.  I haven't got tickets this year as I wasn't sure when my operation was going to be.  Last year I paid a deposit on tickets for the weekend and then couldn't go as I was in hospital, I wasn't going to make that mistake again!  We went a couple of years ago and saw Fatboy Slim, who I thought was brilliant.  OH moaned that it wasn't real music, all he did was stand there and press buttons! Oh well we all have our own taste in music.

The letter came through today with the date for my op, 3 weeks from tomorrow.  I was really surprised it has come through so quickly.  I'm feeling a little nervous about it, I don't know why as it's nothing compared to last year.  The surgeon said hopefully I will be out the same day as he knows I do not want to be in there a minute longer than I have to.  He will be repairing a hernia from last years op where it didn't heal properly. It is by my belly button and makes me look 9 months pregnant so I will be glad when it is fixed, and I will feel more comfortable.  Looking on the bright side, it will be a chance to put my feet up for a while, 3 weeks off work to catch up on reading and crafty things.

I am sitting here with the windows wide open and it is still humid.  We had a shower earlier and I could hear the children out in the street singing "It's raining, it pouring, the old man is snoring.  He went to bed and bumped his head, and wouldn't get up in the morning"  what a strange little song.  I remember singing it as a child.  The history of nursery rhymes can be fascinating, Ring a ring o roses for example.  I lovely little song for children to sing, about the Plague!!

OH has taken his dad to the hospital to visit OH mum who has just had a hip replacement.  Thank goodness for the NHS, our family couldn't manage without it at the moment.  It has its problems but I dread to think what we would do without it.

Anyway, I hope you are all coping with the heat, thank you for all your comments, I love having a 'chat' with you all

Chickpea xx

  1. I will have to look for these books. Best wishes on your operation; I had an umbilical hernia in my pregnancies and it was very painful. I hope it's the beginning of better comfort for you.

  2. Our bit of the country is not so touristy as Cornwall, but still gets busy. We never go to the beach in the school hols!
Sorry to hear you have to be in for an operation, hopefully you will be in and out very quickly

  3. I hope that your OH's Mum is doing well, they will have her up and about again in no time I expect if what I hear from other people is anything to go by. I hope too that your op is successful and that you can just sit back and enjoy your relaxing time whilst recovering. xx

  9. Cloud Atlas is on my new pile of books (having finished the old one, what a surprise). I am in two minds about starting it just now. Funny, we were listening to Fat Boy Slim in the car on our way back to Scotland. I was glad the children were asleep, they would have gasped with shock and horror about the swearing :)
The NHS is a blessing that I appreciate very much. I hope all goes well with your operation and that you'll recover quickly. Cx
