Charity Shops, Good or Bad?

My friend B really is a bad influence on me, we went to Falmouth yesterday as it was such a lovely sunny day.  The problem is, B loves Charity shops, so do I but I try to avoid them because I know I will buy lots of things I don't actually need because they are a 'bargain'.  I am hopeless at resisting so it is better for me to stay away.  Yesterdays haul included a summer top, a lovely Miss Sixty denim bag and some books, one being The Winter Book by Tove Jansson, which was reviewed on The Year in Books and sounded brilliant.  I was really please with my purchases, and the money went to good causes.....however I have shelves full of books which I haven't got around to reading, and enough clothes for my needs.  Most of which I have had for years, funnily enough when were out the other day, a 'trendy' young lady was raving about my 'vintage' shoes and asked where I got them.  Well I bought them 11 years,  so now apparently they are 'vintage' like me.

So personally charity shops don't save me money as I always spend money on things that are not really essential.  If I need something specific, and I mean really need it then charity shops are great, but for someone like me who can't resist a 'bargain' charity shop are to be avoided.

How about you, do you get carried away when you see a bargain?  Do you love charity shops or do you avoid them because you will spend money on things you don't need?

Thank you for all your lovely comments, I love hearing from you.  I will leave you with some photos from yesterday.  Our view as we sat on a bench and ate lunch,  (keeping a close eye out for thieving seagulls)

  3. I don't come off too badly with charity shops as I try and only go when I am making a donation, so I always come away with less than I drop off, but I can totally understand the appeal of them!! Hope that you keep loving your "vintage" shoes!! xx

  4. Your photos make me want to visit Cornwall. I'm useless in charity shops as I never seem to find the bargains unless I go with my friend who always finds things for me to buy!

  7. Definitely a charity shop lover, though unlike Amy when I donate I tend to come back with more than I took. I have a collection of tat that is growing at an alarming rate!

  8. I used to love a good rummage through a charity shop but they have gotten too expensive in our area. There are a couple of independent charities (cats and dogs) where a bargain can still be had but the big "chain" CS are silly prices.

I love a good jumble as there's loads of bargains to be snapped up and all around the 30p mark.

I love your pictures as always x

  10. Thank you Julee.

Yes the charity shops in Truro are more expensive than they used to be, especially the well known ones x

  11. I love them. I go often but don't spend a lot. My favorite one offers coupons frequently, so that helps. But I'm very cheap by nature so it's easy to limit myself. Once I was told that people shouldn't shop in thrift/charity shops unless they're poor, that's who they're for. I think that's silly. Money is money, if it's going to the charity, I think anyone should be able to take advantage of bargains.

  12. I pop in occasionaly, usually just for books sometimes I strike lucky and get a few goods ones, I have managed a few times to get some clothes I like, an I have bought dresses or shirts just for the fabric.

  13. I love your fresh and sunny pics, the colours are so radiant.
I love the chazza shops too, but like you I am mindful of what I buy now. I tend to donate something if i buy, that way i have 'new' things without too much stuff.

  14. I agree with you Jennifer, the charity shops are there to make money for the charity they support, so they don't mind who shops there. x

  15. The books are the first thing I look at Dawn, I really can't resist buying books which is why I should stay away. My books shelves are groaning under the strain. x

  16. Thank you Jean.

I take a lot of stuff in to the charity shops when I'm having a clear out, then end up filling up the space I made again with more stuff that I spot in there. x
